A two-day Pediatric Palliative Care course was recently conducted in Chișinău, with the participation of 29 healthcare professionals from the Hospices of Hope teams in Taraclia, Soroca, Orhei, Ocnița, and Chișinău. The course aimed to enhance the understanding of Pediatric Palliative Care concepts, phased symptom and pain management approaches, teamwork and patient-family communication, as well as the importance of self-care in palliative care.
Experienced and internationally recognized trainers in the field of pediatric palliative care, Julia Downing and Emily Harrop, were responsible for conducting the course. Julia Downing, the Executive Director of the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN), holds extensive experience in healthcare and research. Emily Harrop, a consultant pediatrician and scientific researcher, has authored over 35 publications on care for infants, children, and young individuals with life-limiting conditions.
The course employed interactive presentations, case studies, group discussions, as well as real-life scenario simulations and group exercises, to facilitate active learning. Participants were able to better understand the concept of Pediatric Palliative Care and enhance their knowledge in phased symptom and pain management. The outcomes achieved in the course were highly encouraging. Participants acquired solid skills in the field of Pediatric Palliative Care, which they will apply in their professional practice. Furthermore, they developed improved communication abilities with patients and their families, which will positively impact the quality of palliative care provided.
Moving forward, a Zoom meeting will be organized three months after the course's completion (August 30, 2023), during which participants will assess their acquired knowledge and discuss strategies for practical implementation.
